Cruise Industry News - August 2024

by Colm Bushell | August 9, 2024 | Blog | 0 Comments
It is insane to think that we are already eight months into the year. As we enter the summer holiday season, let's take a moment to delve into some of the latest cruise news. This month's highlights include NCL's admirable display of corporate social responsibility, MSC's groundbreaking fuel efficiency tool, Starlink's ongoing triumphs in the cruise industry, and a Geek Cruise ship's valiant rescue mission to save 77 stranded migrants off the coast of Greece.

NCL Has Extended Appreciation Perks To The Canadian Military

Norwegian Cruise Line is extending its Military Appreciation Program to Canada, offering active Canadian service members, veterans, and their families special onboard experiences, amenities, and a 10% discount on cruise fares across all sailings on every ship in the NCL fleet. This initiative includes past and present members of the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, and Canadian Coast Guard. Upon boarding, military guests and their families are treated to exclusive amenities and experiences, such as an invite to a special onboard reception, a personalised welcome packet, and additional surprises.

MSC's Itinerary Tool To Cut Up To 15% Of Emissions

Known as OPTICruise, this innovative tool was developed in collaboration with the research company OPTIMeasy, located at the University of Genoa. The software's algorithm considers various data points including port call sequencing, arrival times, ship speeds, and operational expenses. Through detailed analysis, it optimises cruise itineraries for enhanced energy efficiency. During the testing phase, the 171,598 gross tonnage MSC Bellissima underwent a 12-month evaluation while navigating between 17 Mediterranean ports. As cruise schedules are typically set two years in advance, the impact of OPTICruise will not be fully realised until 2026, coinciding with MSC Cruises’ expansion to 24 ships.

The Success Of SpaceX's Starlink Internet Services Aboard Cruise Ships

With a notable shift towards improving internet connectivity at sea, numerous cruise lines are now integrating SpaceX's Starlink internet services into their fleets. This cutting-edge technology holds the promise of revolutionising how passengers and crew members access the internet while on voyages. Renowned for its high-speed satellite internet capabilities, Starlink aims to address the enduring challenge of slow and unreliable internet at sea. Traditional satellite internet services on cruise ships frequently encounter issues like high latency and restricted bandwidth, resulting in discontent among passengers.
