MSC Diverts Vessels To Protect Endangered Sperm Whales

Our friend Holly Payne at Seatrade Cruise News brought us this heart-warming update about MSC last week.

It appears that MSC Cruises is set to reroute its ships in the Mediterranean between mid-April and October. This is being done to reduce the risk of harm to the sperm whale population there.

It is estimated that around 200 to 300 sperm whales remain in the area. Over half those found stranded on the Greek coast have endured a collision with vessels and most do not survive. This then is a very welcome move by MSC, who are supported by WWF Greece and the WWF network.

Over 6m Have Cruised Since Industry Restart

- Almost 100% is projected to be in operation by August 2022
- 5.8 million people cruised in 2020
- This total represented an 81% drop from 2019 (when 29.7m cruised)
