Written by Asa Sargeant | 27/10/21 14:24

As we near November – yes, you read that correctly – we felt it time to give you an IT News Round-up Oct 2021-style. Coming a bit later than usual, we have also decided to add some stories that we felt particularly drawn to. Stories that are not typical news updates but which we feel may be of interest to you, our loyal followers. If you have not already subscribed to our regular ICEbreaker newsletter you can do so at the foot of the page. You can also follow us on LinkedIn at ICE and theICEway, plus we have Twitter for even more content!

International Internet Day (Oct 29th)

It is incredibly difficult to imagine a world where the internet does not exist. Many of our teams on theICEway remember the days before its arrival. This writer certainly does and wonders how we managed to survive for so long! On October 29th we celebrate International internet day, in honour of the very first message to be transmitted via an online network. That took place on October 29, 1969 and over 50 years later more than half of us in the world are now using the internet.

You can observe this fun day in a variety of ways:

- Consider the world without the internet – how would your life be different?
- Think about those without access to the internet – what challenges do they face as a direct result? Are there any positives to not being connected?
- You could then share your musings socially, using #InternationalInternetDay (if you add us in using #theiceway, we might just respond…)

This BBC News story on the 2021 Budget reveals that a significant portion of the extra £5.9bn going to the NHS will be for digital improvements. The government confirmed that it will fund additional diagnostic tests such as CT, MRI and ultrasound scans. Having worked in the healthcare sector for many years, we are particularly glad to hear about this boost for what is such a crucial industry.

And finally…

TheICEway Make Regional Final At The National Apprenticeship Awards 2021

We are absolutely thrilled to have been East of England regional finalists at this year’s National Apprenticeship Awards. Finishing as runners-up in the SME Employer of the year category, we beat out hundreds of entrants. Congratulations must go to Higgins Partnerships for progressing to next month’s National finals but we’re delighted all the same. Apprentices are a vital part of theICEway ecosystem and we look forward to welcoming more in the years ahead. In fact, we are always on the look out for new talent so do get in touch if a career in IT interests you.

That is all for your IT News Round-up Oct 2021. A slight departure from our usual editions, we hope you found it to be of interest. As ever, we’d be delighted to hear your thoughts so please leave comments below.

NB: For the more eagle-eyed readers out there, yes, we know we missed rounding up the September news. Huge apologies, it won’t happen again!
