A couple of weeks ago, we announced our new partnership with CleanHub. This year, we have pledged to help them in their mission to end plastic pollution by committing to recover 2500kg of plastic waste. Together, theICEway and CleanHub are working to improve waste management systems, which can definitely help prevent plastic pollution. In this article we reveal how our first month has gone as we strive to protect the world’s oceans.
Our collection and recovery efforts are in full swing and to date, 164kg of plastic waste has already been recovered. That is the equivalent of 16,438 0.5 litre-size plastic bottles. It represents just over 6.5% of our overall waste collection target, and is quite a staggering amount when you think about it.
Thus far, the first increment of our collection came in from Got Bag, a CleanHub partner ‘hub’ who team with a network of fishermen to collect plastic waste as bycatch. Operating in Demak, Jepara and Bantul, Indonesia, Got Bag were responsible for developing the world’s first backpack made of Ocean Impact Plastic. As well as collecting plastic waste, they also set up waste management structures in coastal areas to prevent plastic waste ending up in the ocean.
As our efforts continue, more hubs will be added and we’re truly excited to see how everything will pan out. In addition to the numbers already mentioned, you can find more in the live CleanHub impact report for theICEway.
