Cruise Industry Tech Eco-Efforts

by Asa Sargeant | December 16, 2020 | General News & Events, Cruise & Maritime | 0 Comments

As IT experts working in the cruise industry, we always look out for technology trends. We always strive for innovation, and in that we are not alone it seems.

Many cruise lines today are working hard to improve their environmental policies. In the recent past efforts with recycling were cutting edge but nowadays it is expected.

Eco-friendly technology is being adopted for new builds as well as some older vessels. “Scrubber” systems are also now being used to minimise exhaust emissions. New hull designs allow ships to advance through the water with more efficiency.

Eco-Friendly Practices In Cruise

Cruise lines have adopted onboard recycling and incineration policies. These are based around materials such as plastic, glass, scrap metal, oil and electronics. The materials are disposed on land rather than at sea. In some cases, items that would have been bound for landfill are instead donated to charities.

Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) Technology has also been embraced. These systems help to clean ship engine exhausts and improve the quality of emissions.

Shore-power technologies can also have a positive impact on the environment. Ships now utilise electrical power when docking so that internal power sources can be saved.

CLIA Technologies & Practices Report (Sep 2020)

A few months ago a report was released by the Cruise Lines International Association. The statistics within demonstrate the progress being made in the industry with environmental protection. Below are some of the key findings from the respondents.

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Fuel will be used on 49% of new builds, up by 51% compared to 2018 findings.

EGCS usage is up by 25% compared to 2018.

99% of new ships on order are set to have Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems. This means that global capacity is up to 78.5%.

75% of new build capacity are to be fitted with shore-side electricity systems or will be configured to add shore-side power in the future.

Conclusion

The cruise industry is a dynamic one. It is implementing better practices and better technologies. The environment must be protected, and cruise is doing its utmost to fulfil that.
