It is the start of April and so time for a look back at last month’s updates from one of our key sectors. That’s right, it’s ‘cruise industry news Mar 2022’. Last month saw the UK government pledging huge spend towards green maritime technology. NCLH then appointed a Godmother for the Norwegian Prima, whilst MSC signed a partnership deal with the F1.

£206m Towards Green Maritime Technology In The UK

This piece from Seatrade Cruise reveals significant new R&D funding for clean maritime technologies from the UK Government.

There will also be an extension to the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. In a bid to lay down a marker for the future, a green maritime technology department has also been established.

Known as the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), it will implement the R&D programme. It will work closely with the cruise industry, its remit including the construction of greener cruise ships.

Norwegian Prima Gets A Famous Godmother

This release from the NCL Newsroom confirms its latest appointment as global superstar Katy Perry.

The American Idol judge will serve as the godmother to NCL’s innovative Norwegian Prima, due to debut in August 2022. This news comes hot off the heels of Virgin announcing a similar appointment in the shape of Jennifer Lopez.

New Multi-Year Partnership Deal For MSC Cruises & F1

This story from Seatrade’s Holly Payne outlines a new partnership between MSC and Formula 1.

As a global partner, MSC Cruises can berth its ships at nearby ports during certain Grand Prix weekends. Both companies also committed to becoming net zero after the deal was struck on March 20th at the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2022.

That is it for another month, we hope you enjoyed ‘cruise industry news Mar 2022’. What do you think of our selection? There were certainly lots of more sobering updates to choose from but we felt the need for a lighter touch at this moment in time.
